The Frankfort Terminal Railroad* David and Judy Palmeter Indiana Large Scale Railroaders After all the fantastic layouts shown by the ILSR members, here is an example of a typical beginner's railroad. When you are new to the hobby, particularly if you have been an indoor railroader, putting trains outside takes some getting used to. Then there is the likelihood that the garden wasn't planted with trains in mind. So the route some of us take is simply laying track on the mulch and routing it around the obstacles present. The first four pictures below show the various routes considered before the final route was chosen. By using sectional track with lots of curves and joints, we broke lots of rules and recommendations immediately. However, the layout was amazingly reliable in its first year of operation. The second year I learned about pouring foundations and track cleaning, among other things. Much more information can be found here. *known to the grandchildren as "The Too Many Rules Railroad"

Much, much more about the development of our garden railroad, plus a little of my personal model railroad history can be seen on my web site HERE.
