The Pennsy Trail Railroad

James and Donna Driesbach

An indoor layout that got started with a bang

Here are some pictures of my indoor layout. This room is, at best, 15' by 15' with 2 sloped walls, which made it a challenge to do a 1/29 scale layout. As you can see, I managed to get three complete loops with a siding to the grain elevator. My loops consist of 9 foot diameter on the outside, then 8 feet, then a 6.5 foot loop. I don't have much straight area but it still works for me.

I am not finished with a lot of my details, especially the grain elevator and silos. I have enclosed some still photos of the grain elevator and silos to give you an idea of what I was trying to model. This is still used in Greenfield today. Years ago it had a siding for train cars to be loaded and now it is truck only.

The switches are remote and wired, also the crossing lights work and flash. I am using chicken grit for my ballast. The road signs and the utility poles are hand made. I choose to use 1/32 scale vehicles. In my opinion they look more to scale with 1/29 engines and rolling stock.

This room was originally an unfinished attic until one day I got the bright idea to take a sledge hammer (while my wife was at work) presto - train room. So I have a narrow opening to get into the room and no draw bridge as of now, but I still have fun and make it work. Well, anyway, maybe this will give some people who think they don't have room to do a layout of this scale indoors, renewed hope in what can be accomplished with a sledge hammer and when the wife's not home.
